Toki Pimeja: write and say binary data in Toki Pona --------------------------------------------------- Toki Pimeja (lit. "obscure speech" in Toki Pona) is an encoding that incorporates both the robustness of PGP wordlists and versatility of Bytewords into the beauty of Toki Pona constructed language. Due to the limited vocabulary size, each byte is encoded as two words from a 32-word list. For the first nibble (4 bits), the corresponding word is taken from the first column, and for the second nibble it's taken from the second one. Thus, the byte 5F is "mama wile" but the byte F5 is "weka meli". You can also use this encoding to say about really large numbers by converting them to hexadecimal first. The following wordlist restrictions are in place to make the data easily recognizable and decodable: - all words must belong to the 137-word essential Toki Pona vocabulary; - all words are two syllables long; - all words start with a consonant; - all words are distinct from each other by their first syllable; - none of the words must be "luka", "nanpa", "sike" or start with "to" or "pi" syllables. Also, thanks to these limitations, one can write shorthand encoding of the bytes even in a non-TP environment, as the nibble value and its position in the byte are fully identified by the first syllable (e.g. F5 will be "weme"). This is called the short encoding (toki pimeja lili). Transmission begins with the words "toki pimeja open" (or "toki pimeja lili open") and ends with "pini". The Toki Pimeja wordlist: 0 jaki jelo 1 kala kili 2 kule lape 3 leko lili 4 loje lupa 5 mama meli 6 mije moku 7 musi nasa 8 nena nimi 9 noka pali A pona sama B selo sina C soko suno D taso telo E tomo wawa F weka wile Example: 0xDEADBEEF = taso wawa pona telo selo wawa tomo wile, or "tawapotesewatowi" in the short encoding. The full transmission (oral or written form, any writing system allowed) would look like: toki pimeja open taso wawa pona telo selo wawa tomo wile pini The short transmission (written form, Latin alphabet only) would look like: toki pimeja lili open tawapotesewatowi pini This spec was published on Dec 18 2023.
